Darius Devas | Class of 2002

Memorable school moment?

We went on a camp to Lady Musgrave Island in Year Seven. We were the only people camping on the island and it was a very special time out of time. Year Seven was a special year in general, we had two great new Guardians Simon and Melaina and they really met all that thirteen year old energy with a lot of vitality.

Did you have a plan when you left school?

I thought I wanted to be an actor but quickly realised I was better suited behind the lens, so started making films.

What skill from school became more important after leaving than you expected?

I think I gained a sense of belief in my ability to do what I dreamed of doing in the world, which to me is very different from self confidence. I feel my education instilled a belief of self in me that I’m very grateful I have. It’s funny; a few times over the years, I’ve recognised it in other people and asked them if they went to a Steiner school and every time I was right!

Is there something you remember from school that always makes you laugh?

We were a very small group in Year 11/12 and I just remember a lot of time hanging out in our class room during lunch having the best banter, it really felt like a little family to me.

Since leaving school what have you been up to?

I’ve been a filmmaker pretty much since the day I left school, it’s been a long and winding journey but I’m proud of the life I carved out for myself. I’m currently developing a documentary series about Irish culture and the importance of forming a connection with

where you come from. You can watch the trailer for the series here and if you feel to you can support the project by making a donation:

One thing I miss about Cape Byron is:

I loved the comradery on the daily basis, I spend a lot of time now working solo and I wished my work environment had more community like our year 12 lunch time banter!
