Love is…
Love is one of our core values. It may sound highfalutin for a school, risky even in this day and age, but it is central to who we are and what we do. Love for the children. Love for humanity. Love for a world that we want to change, for the better.
At Spring Fair, love was everywhere: in the joyful weaving of the maypole ribbons by Class 4, in the magnificent and zero waste decorations by Class 3, in the offerings of student music, parent-run stalls, in the craft, food, generous raffle donations, and in the lead up of volunteer P&F hours.
At our Alumni event the following day, which Paddy Nash wrote about for this edition, one of our founders Susan Perrow spoke about the impulse behind the school: to offer an education that would change the world.
Her three boys were already in school, so it wasn’t for them that she, and four others including Lyn McCormick, persisted with the conviction that we could build a school that offers children something more, something infused by love. We owe so much to their determination and their unfailing love.
Recently, our teachers shared what they love about working with children, about teaching at Cape Byron, and about Waldorf education. Common threads shone through: love of ‘ah-ha’ moments of learning, of work that shapes how future generations see the world, of witnessing an emerging sense of self unfold in each student. “I love getting to know each child a little better every day,” wrote one, “Finding out where they shine.”
It is often said that as human beings we are motivated, ultimately, by one of two emotions: fear or love. Let’s be a community that is moved into action by love, as we were at Spring Fair. Our past students and teachers showed us what it offers: something for life.
Love is showing up, together, for our children.
