Cape Byron Steiner School will this year be celebrating NAIDOC week in week three of term three. Local Arakwal women Rikkara McGuinness, and a recent appointment to Cape Byron Steiner staff as our Indigenous Liaison Officer, will be organising and participating in this year’s celebrations. It will include local indigenous artists and traditional basket weavers working in both the high school and the primary school and sharing their knowledge and culture. Uncle Pete will also be there to undertake a traditional smoking ceremony in the school assembly in the amphitheatre on Wednesday 2/8/2023. On top of these wonderful activities there will be other lessons where craft and music will explore the culture of our First Nations people.
A school wide art competition will also take place. Students who wish to enter need to design an artwork that is no bigger than A4 in size and that represents a celebration of indigenous culture. The winning entry will have their design printed on to T-shirts that all members of the class will receive. Entries need to be given to the top office with their name, class and guardian on the back of artwork by Wednesday 2nd August end of day (middle of week 3).
