Principal/Head of School

Full-time position

About the School

Cape Byron Rudolf Steiner School (CBRSS) is an independent K–12 Steiner school grounded in Anthroposophy. We educate the whole child – intellectually, emotionally, physically, and spiritually – fostering confidence, purpose, and a love of learning. The school serves 382 students on 6 idyllic acres in Byron Bay, in the heart of the Northern Rivers.

The Opportunity

CBRSS seeks a Principal/Head of School to lead in the spirit of service and collaboration — guiding our community with humility, care, and dedication to the flourishing of others. The Principal provides pedagogical and administrative leadership in alignment with Steiner/Waldorf principles, nurturing a collaborative culture that honours the spiritual and human development of students, staff, and families.

Spiritual and Educational Ethos

Steiner education and Anthroposophical values are central to CBRSS’s culture and curriculum. We seek a leader who understands that leadership is an act of service — to children, staff, community, and the spiritual purpose of education. A living relationship to Anthroposophy or a demonstrated spiritual path is highly desirable.

Traits and Inner Work

  • Service-Oriented Leadership: Genuine commitment to the wellbeing of others.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Self-awareness, empathy, and strong relationship skills.
  • Humility & Accountability: Integrity, responsibility, and transparency.
  • Compassion: Respect and care for students, staff, and community.
  • Commitment to Inner Development: Ongoing personal and spiritual growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Pedagogical Leadership: Inspire and guide a rich, developmentally appropriate K–12 Steiner curriculum.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Foster a culture of consultation and shared governance with all staff & board members
  • Staff Wellbeing & Development: Support and mentor staff, fostering professional and personal growth.
  • Community Engagement: Build trusting relationships with parents, caregivers, and the broader community.
  • Operational & Strategic Management: Oversee daily operations and strategic planning in alignment with vision and values.

Selection Criteria

  • Deep commitment to Steiner/Waldorf education and Anthroposophy
  • Leadership experience in a Steiner/Waldorf context.
  • Service-oriented philosophy of leadership.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of child development through an Anthroposophical lens.
  • Organisational and strategic capacity.
  • Connection to, or openness to develop, ties with the Byron Shire/Northern Rivers community.
