In earlier times, human beings were far more connected with nature; they felt themselves to be part of the whole living world around them.

In just one morning, using only found objects foraged around the school grounds – sticks, leaves, paperbark, stones, twine, flowers – Class 7 was set the challenge of building their own shelter inspired by their studies of Palaeolithic humans.

The students managed to create not only shelters that are functional, but beautiful too. One shelter was bedded down with turf that the students are continuing to water each day – and the grass is growing.

Class 7’s first high school Main Lesson, Echoes of the Ancestors, a study of the Palaeolithic era, gave insight into sustainability and the risk of consumption. Many students were in awe of human ingenuity and the ability to feed, clothe and provide shelter for oneself based only on our natural surroundings.
