Visiting this week we are lucky to have Arakwal Bumberbin Bundjalung Elder Delta Kay to help us celebrate NAIDOC week.

The theme this year is…

‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’

Our Indigenous Liaison Officer, Rikkara, has been busy organising some great guest speakers, and indigenous craft for our classes including weaving with Aunty Deb, rock painting and indigenous craft.

We started the celebration of NAIDOC week by inviting local Arakwal Bundjalung woman Delta Kay and Aunty Debra Cole to teach our High School students all about culture, caring for country and living off the land. Delta and Deb explained the importance of learning uses of natural fibres including making rope, weaving to make baskets and fishing nets as an essential part of indigenous knowledge.
Delta also told stories of her upbringing on country, and her experience in school as well as a beautiful acknowledgement of country in traditional Bundjalung language.
All the students involved have been very respectful and showed interest in learning new and exciting things. Rikkara would like to thank all the students and teachers involved in the classes on Monday, she couldn’t be more proud!

On our Wednesday whole school assembly, we have a Welcome to Country ceremony with Nigel then songs, dance and telling stories.

Our school celebrates NAIDOC week to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
