As part of their Chemistry main lesson, Class 7 learnt all about combustion. Combustion is a chemical reaction in which a substance—typically a fuel (in this case, a gummy bear)—reacts with oxygen to release energy in the form of heat and light. This process is commonly known as burning.
Students watched as their teacher heated sodium chlorate until it melted. Then, a gummy bear was added to the molten sodium chlorate, triggering a dramatic reaction. The gummy bear was rapidly consumed in a fiery explosion, producing a large amount of smoke. The sugar in the gummy bear underwent rapid oxidation, forming carbon dioxide and water in a highly exothermic reaction.
What a way to learn Chemistry!
