Learn the magical process of cyanotype printing using flowers, leaves and nature. Informed by Anna Atkins’ work in 1842, ‘Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions’.
Cyanotype imagery, developed in the 19th century as a way of documenting botanical specimens, is one of the oldest forms of photography. In this one-day workshop, Northern Rivers visual artist Katie Alleva will lead participants step by step through the fascinating technique of cyanotype, an alternative photography technique, that uses objects from the natural world to create dreamy, surrealistic images.
Katie Alleva is a practising artist and educator from the Byron Shire. She has exhibited widely across regional Australia and has been the recipient of numerous awards. Her love of cyanotype stems from her early exposure to pinhole photography at age fourteen. Katie loves the immediacy of the technique, using the sun to expose the impression on the paper, washing the print and hanging it out to dry on the clothesline. The use of botanicals is influenced by working as a florist in her early twenties.
