Tree planting & Environmental rehabilitation

A number of classes have been assisting our neighbour to plant 11,000 trees to create a continuous wildlife corridor from the Byron Escarpment to the Belongil Forest.

This will incorporate our Melaleuca Forest, to the north of the school that we planted some 10 years ago.

As part of the process Ben from “Eco Recharge” talked with the students about species selection, growth patterns & tree life, wildlife habitat & correct tree planting & mulching techniques.

Most students found it a rewarding experience and looked forward to seeing, in the future, the school nestled within a beautiful local endemic forest.

Eco Recharge has also planted approximately 50,000 trees along the Byron Escarpment behind the school. At the same time eliminating invasive weed species from the area.

It was a pleasure to be involved in this project, which was facilitated by a parent of the school who is managing the project. He came to us with the proposal after attending our Master Plan Presentation & World Café on parent involvement in the school. He saw how elements of their project overlapped elements of our Master Plan & recognised opportunities for collaboration.

This has also led to us being able to expand our playing field, providing much needed activity space. Some drainage work yet to be done.

RC&M Day

Thank you to the parents and students who so generously gave of their time, skill and labour on Saturday to help out on the Repair, Care and Maintenance Day last Saturday. I very much appreciate your help and support. Our school looks wonderful after your work! Thank you to the teachers who came along to help, to Craig for the amazing lunch and to Gavin who works so hard to set up these days. Next year we will be offering a range of new opportunities for parents and teachers to get involved – look out for the new twilight event which will be happening at the beginning of the year.

A Productive RC&M Day!

Our new Repair Care & Maintenance Day (RCM) program was a great success with more people attending & everyone seemed to be really enjoying them selves.

We concentrated on two main areas and this allowed people to work together more & provided a greater sense of achievement at the end.

Next year we will also have a twilight RCM day, 3 – 6pm on a school day with BBQ dinner after.

Our new name challenge has so far provided: Community Days & Community Care Days. If you have any other ideas please email Gavin at site@ or text or phone 0427 847 400.

One major highlight for me was to see my 19-month-old grandson come walking in pushing his wheelbarrow I recently bought him. He had come to help out with his father & grandfather. His father, our son, was a student here.

To me this is what the day is all about: vibrant community through working together.

Honey Bee Hive

Spring is in the air and it’s a perfect time to welcome the school’s newly arrived honey bees!
We now have a colony of bees safely ensconced in their new top bar hive at the school. They are settling in nicely and can be seen busy gathering nectar and pollen in the spring blossom. In the future they will provide an opportunity for students to observe and learn about these fascinating creatures and to sample the fruits of their tireless labour.

The Next RCM Day ~ Saturday 20 August

We have listened to your requests at the recent World Café on Parent Participation.

Our first step in improving the RCM day is to concentrate on only 2 areas, so people are able to work close together in groups.

So we are working on Beautification of School Entrance around bottom car park entry areas. The second area will be Beautification around Administration Area.

This work will also feed into preparing our site as a showcase for all the new visitors at this years Spring Fair.

Of course you can still do work around your classroom as well.

Last time people really enjoyed having a lunch prepared by Craig at the canteen so we will continue with that as well.

Also to manage safety of children onsite we will, in the future, have a supervised gardening program for all students attending. We will incorporate other ideas as time goes along including online info etc.

So lets have a record turn out, come along and encourage other parents to come and lets have a wonderful time together.

A suggestion was to also come up with a new name for the day. So any suggestions please email to Gavin – site@

Repair Care & Maintenance Day

Repair Care & Maintenance (RCM) Day
Saturday week the 28th May – 9am – 3pm
Lunch supplied by canteen

This is our second, RCM day for the year and another chance to enhance the beauty of our school. The children love it when their parents have an intimate knowledge of the place that they hang out in all day. They can tell you something, about their school environment, and know when you understand what they are referring to. You don’t have to work just in the area around your classroom but anywhere in the school where the task takes your fancy. There are lots of varieties of tasks and the more people we have the more fun the tasks are when done together. Encourage others to come along and help out. If we get good at working together we will be able to take on more challenging tasks and really help the school soar.

See you there!

Saturday 28th May from 9am – 3pm
Lunch will be supplied by  the Canteen

See You There!

A Big Thank You from Gavin

We appreciate the good work done by the 30 + parents at our recent Repair Care & Maintenance Day. You made a wonderful difference to the place. The gardens are humming, the buildings are sighing and the furniture is lapping it up. We would be hard pressed to provide such a rich and wonderful learning environment for our students without this added input from you parents.

Next RCM is Sat 28th May. Put it in your calendar and come along and join in this vibrant day in the life of our school. With more people attending & cooperation skills multiplying we will be able to take on many more ambitious projects to improve our school-earning environment.

We would love to here of ideas for projects you’d like to see happen and help in organising.

Seven lengths of Bamboo 7-8 meters long.
Tapering to about 20mm so we can slide flags onto.
Can count for your RCM hours.
If you can help, please ring Gavin 0427 847 400 or email:  site@

RCM Day 5 March

BBQ Lunch supplied by P&F

Our first RCM Day is on Saturday week and this is a great opportunity to contribute to the life of the school, get to know more people and build the healthy social life of the school community.

All families are billed $250 annually for maintenance of the school infrastructure, in lieu of 16 hours contribution of time. This can be worked off in many ways such as on our 3 RCM days each year, or support in the canteen or other tasks for teachers, administration & library. You can also make arrangements with the Site Manager to help out at any other time of the year that suits. We are always in need of support to help our school thrive.

So on this RCM day there will be a great variety of tasks from gardening to painting & oiling buildings & furniture, small construction & repair tasks plus cleaning, organising and other soft tasks for parents with small children. You can work in any area of the school, so a great opportunity to get to know other parts of the school & work alongside other parents. The children love it when their parents know their environment & can relate to them on where they have been hanging out for the day.

We will have a lovely shared BBQ Lunch supplied by P&F at around 12.30pm providing another opportunity to chat and get to know each other.

The more people that come the greater the fun you have at your tasks as you have others to share it with. There are many spaces in the school so everyone can become very spread out, so encourage others you know to come and share in the many tasks.

See You There!
