Hello everyone,

What a big last two weeks it has been! Last week provided us with a pointed reminder of the power of nature and that we human beings simply can’t control everything.

When we made the decision on Thursday to ask parents to pick up their children early, we did it with the knowledge that this would not be possible for every parent, however it would ensure that as many children as possible could get home before the really wild weather and flooding hit. I would like to thank the parents for responding with such grace and speed to our call. I would also like to thank our Administration Staff and Teachers for supporting this process, the children and our families so well.

As always, no communication is ever perfect. I am aware that some parents didn’t get the text message until much later (we believe the issue was with the telecommunications providers). We texted, emailed and also put an alert on our website. If you are ever in doubt when there is a major weather event, please check our school website as we will always put the up-to-date information there.

I know that some of our staff and families have suffered losses due to the flooding (both at home and in some workplaces). We are working to provide all the support we can to those families. If you have been affected by the flooding, please do let us know so that we can support in whatever way we can.

I hope everyone has a safe, happy (and dry) Easter break. Thank you for a wonderful term of learning and sharing as a school community. I look forward to seeing you all next term.

Opening hours for the holidays

The School Office will be open to the public Monday to Thursday in week 1 of the Holidays (10.4.2017-13.4.2017) from 10am-3pm. The Office will be closed all of week 2 and re-opens Monday 24th April (closed Tuesday 25th for Anzac day.)

The first day of School is Wednesday 26th of April.

We wish you a happy and safe Holiday and look forward to seeing you then!

Dear parents, students and school community,

My name is Lily, and I am currently in year 10 here at Cape Byron Rudolf Steiner School.

I’d like to begin by thanking everybody who has already donated, your contribution has helped to make this happen and I have now put together my first 20 or so #PeriodPacks.

As this will be an ongoing initiative, with packs made up each month your continual donations and support will be very much appreciated.

I am also looking for prizes that I can raffle to fundraise for the cause. So I would also be delighted to receive any donations in this area.

Recently I have become aware of groups helping homeless women in big cities, like Sydney, through the distribution of care packages filled with things like sanitary items and a bottle of water. These basics not only help women who are on the streets manage basic hygiene, but also allow them to spend what money they do have on food and other necessities, rather than sanitary products.

Shocked by the realisation that I’ve never really thought about how homeless women manage menstruation, I did some research on whether Byron Bay and surrounds had any similar services. They don’t.

When you walk around Byron Bay, you don’t see many homeless women; but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. As I read in the Northern Star, “The people you see day to day on the street is by far the minority…The vast majority of ‘hidden’ homeless people include…large numbers of vulnerable women, especially younger single parents, older women, and a large number of women fleeing domestic violence.”

I’d like to help these women, in what ways I can. One of those ways is by giving them clean sanitary items. I hope to make up several care packages and drop them into homeless centres and soup kitchens in Byron Bay and Lismore (to begin with) and hopefully expand from there.

I would very much appreciate any donations, sanitary products or other basic toiletries, such as toothbrushes and deodorant etc, which can be dropped into the office for me to collect.

Yr 12 performing at Bluesfest

Year 12 music students will be performing at bluesfest 12.00 at the juke joint stage on Easter Monday. The students will be performing alongside Byron high and Kadina high as part of the young sounds of Byron. Big thank you to bluesfest for this opportunity.

The In-between – by Joseph Brookes Yr 11

I am the autumn tree,
I live in between.
Like a magician,
I transform my summer coat to announce the oncoming winter,
I give a glimpse of the beauty that lies in between
Creating wonder for children, who, with grateful hearts
Gather my leaf harvest, sharing my rhythm.

The heat of summer’s burning sun,
Is tempered now with a wave of coolness.
As I bare my summer jacket, and prepare
The children don their warmer coats,

My leaves, once a shade of forest green
Colour themselves anew, in deep shades of auburn, reds and golden browns,
Glowing in the autumn sun – the beginning of the in-between,
It’s time to say goodbye to my friends who have kept me company through the heat.

My new jeweling now begins to fall
Like coloured confetti, onto the ground
Leaving me to hibernate, alone
I wait now in-between.

Excursion to Dorroughby Education Centre

Classes 3 and 6 took a trip back in time on their visit to Dorroughby Education Centre. The staff there shared their knowledge of the Big Scrub rainforest of this region and the useful plants that can be found in it, such as the ‘Red Gold’ that was harvested in the 1800’s. We looked at an old crosscut saw and saw photos of the Cedar getters – it was a hard life back then.
One of the highlights of the day was an experience of life in an 1800’s schoolhouse. The children lined up and presented their hands for inspection by their ‘teacher’ then marched into the schoolhouse to practice copperplate writing on slates. They recited some proverbs, dressed up in old fashioned clothing, stitched a sampler, and practiced adding pounds, shilling and pence. Our teacher, ‘Ma’am’ was very strict but fortunately no one got the cane on the day.
In the afternoon Class 6 learned about the formation of rocks and minerals whilst Class Three made damper scones and helped to churn butter. There was enough for everyone to have afternoon tea followed by a few old fashioned relay games altogether.
It was a a beautiful sunny day and the children thoroughly enjoyed chatting and playing with their buddies and classmates.

Cl 3 & 4 visit to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

in

On Tuesday this week, class 3 and 4 braved those heavy rain clouds and ventured off to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Thanks to our Currumbin Wildlife Ambassador, Ned in Class 3, we were invited to visit the sanctuary for free. We started the day up at the Discovery Den for an educational talk. Here we got to meet, learn about and pat ‘Wattle’ the elegant stick insect, ‘Turtle’ the Echidna and a VERY big beautiful python!
From there we ventured on to the Free Flight Bird Show where we encountered some magnificent birds such as the barking owl, the black kite and the wedge-tailed eagle. As our adventure continued, we met lots of very cute koalas, kangaroos, reptiles and some hungry crocodiles!
We all arrived back safe and sound, much drier than we’d expected to and with LOTS of wondrous animal tales to tell. A big thank you to our lovely parent helpers Nadine and Cindy for coming along.
