There are many aspects to early mathematics teaching that do not involve working with numbers. The class has yet to have their Introduction To Numbers Main Lesson but we have begun mathematics practise sessions by exploring, classifying and sorting. These activities enable students to begin thinking mathematically by looking for common attributes that objects may have which is the beginning of geometry and making patterns. As an introduction to this the students heard about Gordon the Green Gnome who loved collecting and sorting things that he found (just quietly I feel he has a case of OCD) but one day a possum broke into his house and mixed up all his collections so I enlisted the help of the students to reorganise his collections which the children thoroughly enjoyed. After this we will begin exploring patterns in music and objects.
